Electric Power Generation – The Untold Reality.

Are you aware that most of the world’s electrical power is derived from the burning of coal? And that this is more than likely one of the chief origins of the greenhouse gases, long suspected as the chief culprit in climate change.

It’s next to impossible to envision that every single occasion you turn on a light that you will be partly to blame for the discharge of toxins into the air, but in reality that is just what is actually happening.

Estimations differ, but in the US about half of the electricity produced is derived from coal. In China, the worlds most populous state, coal accocunts for above 70% of the country’s energy usage.

Coal is burnt to produce heat, and then that heat is employed to convert water into steam. This vapor is put under pressure and pushed through turbines, making the turbines rotate. It is the rotation of the turbines that makes the electricity.

While there are other sources of high temperature for steam (eg. nuclear power, geothermal power, and natural gas amongst others) coal is by far and away the most popular fuel used.

The burning of coal releases numerous green house gases and various other harmful materials straight into the air. Among the air-borne pollutants released are:
- CO2 – the biggest cause of climate change,
- Sulfur Dioxide – which creates acid rain,
- Nitrogen Oxide – a significant contributor to smog
- CO(Carbon Monoxide) – a toxin which can kill (CO2 is also found in car exhausts)
- hydrocarbons and volatile organic compounds
- noxious metals for example mercury
- lead and cadmium

Electricity companies, like almost every other business, respond to demand from customers. If there is a need for power then somebody will make money out of delivering it! And while burning coal is among the most efficient ways to generate the electricity, then it will continue to be used.

Consequently, in a very genuine sense, each and every occasion you switch on your microwave oven or lightswitch, somewhere there will be some coal being burnt to create that electrical energy.

Right now there are several alternative sources of electricity that are starting to become more commonplace. Solar, wind power, hydroelectric power, and now even wave power are being utilized and turned into electricity. In the innovative scientific era we live in virtually any variety of energy can be transformed into electricity.

And with developments in technologies it also means that utilizing this renewable source of power for your own private use is becoming much more possible. Actually plenty of people are wanting to go off-grid, develop their own electricity and accordingly reduce the need for electric power produced via burning coal.

To learn more about just how generating your very own electricity can be achieved, have a look at this piece about how straightforward it is to build your own home windmills and harness some no cost green and limitless energy source for yourself.
